1. Our Free Split-Sheet Creator

Since launching Musicspace, we constantly asked ourselves “How can we make our user’s lives easier?”, which led us to think of a free tool we could launch that could benefit artists and producers.

After thinking for a while, we came up with the idea of a Free Split-Sheet creator! – No rocket science here, except so many artists, are unaware of what a Split-Sheet actually is, and why they even needed one. Which is why we’re going to explain in this article!

2. What Is A Split-Sheet?

To put it as simply as possible, a Split-Sheet is an agreement between the creators of a song that outlines who owns what percentage of the song. For example, if I and a friend made a song (he produced it, and I wrote the lyrics), we would need to create and sign a Split-Sheet. The percentage depends entirely on us, but the important part is that we get it in writing and sign it. If there are two writers on a track, it’s generally fair to use a 50/50 split - But, as mentioned above, the percentages are entirely up to you!

3. Do I even need a Split-Sheet?

Absolutely. For every track that involves more than yourself to create it. The reason for this is that things can get incredibly tricky if your song were to suddenly blow up. Think about this, if you and a friend created a song and your friend said, “I don’t want any percentage of the song, keep all the ownership”, you may think it was a super kind gesture. But the real problem comes if your song blows up and your so-called “kind” friend now wants his slice of the cake. And, since you didn’t create and sign a Split-Sheet, it can land you in some big issues financially.

4. The Pain Of Not Signing A Split-Sheet

Expanding on the example above, one of the worst situations you can run into is enjoying your hard-earned royalties one sunny day, only to be slapped in the face by a lawsuit from someone you thought was a friend for an ownership percentage in your song, as well as for you to pay him/her 50% of all the royalties you’ve already earned (and probably spent)! Sounds like a nightmare, right? — Perhaps now you understand why creating and signing such a simple document is so important.

5. What If My Co-Writers Don’t Want To Sign One?

Creating the Split-Sheet isn’t he hard part, but actually getting others to agree to terms and sign it is. We understand it’s a tricky subject, but we advise you to share this blog post with them so that they understand the importance of it.

With our Split-Sheet Creator, you can easily populate all the required fields needed for your co-writers to simply e-sign the PDF such as; Their address, their ownership percentage, PRO numbers, Legal Names and Email addresses.

All they have to do is E-Sign and you’re done! Let them know it’ll only take a few minutes!

6. Where Do I Store My Split-Sheets?

Soon, Musicspace will allow you to store your Split-Sheets within your account. But, for now, we recommend just saving them to a cloud storage service or have a folder in your emails to keep them organized.

Wrap Up

A Split-Sheet is a simple document that could end up saving you hundreds, and even thousands of dollars in the long-term, so we highly advise that you generate one as soon as you finish making a song with someone, whether they’re a producer, engineer, co-writer, etc.

Never only rely on word-of-mouth to seal your deals.
