5 Reason To Build Your Music Catalog

Here's why you should grow your music catalog
Here's why you should grow your music catalog

Music is undeniably one of the favoured mediums of art consumption in the world today. We turn to music when we workout or even when we’re trying to relax and meditate in the mornings. However, with such a monumental growth in consumption over the years, building a solid catalogue is your best bet for reaching the masses, and really pushing your career forward.

1. It Shows Fans You’re Serious

The last thing you want is for someone to stumble across your Spotify, and then your social media, only to see that you’re no longer active or just don’t release music like you once did. People need a reason to follow you, and they love an artist who is active and worth a follow. When you subscribe to ESPN or Netflix, do you subscribe because you know they’re committed to putting out content consistently, or do you subscribe for inactivity? An active, well-produced catalogue shows fans you’re serious and love doing what you do.

2. It Gives People A Reason To Stick Around

In an interview with Joe Budden, Hip-Hop artist, Russ, explained that artists don’t have enough material for fans to actually “become” fans. If a fan finds a song of yours, their natural urge is to seek out more of your songs, but if they find nothing else, they’re less likely to stick around or be interested.

Russ also went to explain how this year he came across the hit show, “Game Of Thrones”. He made it clear that because the show was eight seasons in, he had more than enough material to sit down and consume. If it was a pilot episode or just one series, he probably wouldn’t have had enough to become a true “fan” of the show.

A broad catalogue encourages those new (and existing) fans to be curious and explore more of your art.

3. It Compounds Your Chances Of Success & Revenue

The majority of things in life are all about numbers. For example, if you were a cleaning product salesman, you’d simply have to knock on enough doors before you finally get a sale. Likewise, if you’re a content creator, you never just start with one post that blows up immediately. It takes months and months (even years) before one piece of content is shared to others like a snowball effect.

Take it from me… When I launched the handle AvoraNowCom on Instagram, it took almost a year before B.O.B’s manager reposted our content and essentially helped our brand take off. For those of you not familiar with my page, AvoraNowCom was the go-to page for all of your Music Marketing needs. It is now owned by Beatchain (and has been renamed as @Artist_Growth_Tips).

The same system works with Music, too. The main thing to keep in mind is that as your catalogue grows, so too should your music quality. The worst combination to have is a vast catalogue of bad sounding music. Work on your music structuring and sound and continually grow at your craft. All it takes is one song to bring attention to your other ones.

4. It Proves That You Love Making Music

Far too many artists make music and then close up shop because they didn’t blow up after five songs. What this shows is that they couldn’t have been as passionate about music as they may have claimed. Think about this, Picasso painted over 147,800 pieces of art in his lifetime. Now ask yourself: Do you honestly think every one of those went viral or because famous? - A handful of them, that he painted with passion and his love for art, became famous. What this shows is that he loved to paint. So ensure that your passion really is a passion. Something you can do with or without an income source.

If you truly love music, you’ll have the same passion for it when you make it as from the day you started! :)

5. It allows You To Build Leverage

One of the greatest things about building an extensive catalogue is that it opens up doors for you in the long run. For example, labels or major publishing companies may reach out to you to help you find placements for your music, or exploit your art in ways you wouldn’t be able to.

But……as your catalogue is so vast and so well developed, you have the leverage of negotiating terms to your advantage.
